Fifth Generation (5G)

A look at Fifth Generation (5G)

5G is the fifth generation state-of-the-art wireless tech, bringing a whole host of improvements to wireless networking performance / supporting cellular data networks. It does not only interconnect people but also control machines, objects and devices. Its performance and efficiency can empower new user experience and connect new industries.

Moreover, 5G creates a platform for innovations that enhance today’s mobile broadband services and also expand mobile networks to support a vast diversity of devices and services that assists in connecting new industries with improved performance , efficiency and cost.

5G, based on the IEEE 802.11ac wireless networking standard, now supersedes the present-day 4G/LTE technology, It did not seem like it before as the 5G phones were yet to go mainstream, and ought to be necessary for mainstream adoption.

Gartner predicted that by 2020, the global 5G infrastructure revenue was going to stretch beyond $4.2 billion from 2019’s revenue of $2.2 billion, representing 89% YOY revenue growth.

Another prediction made by Gartner suggested that by 2020 5G NR network infrastructure investments would make up for 12% of communications service providers’ (CSPs) aggregate wireless network infrastructure revenue.

Top telecommunications companies like Verizon have already introduced 5G in certain regions like New York, Omaha, Dallas, and Nebraska. Overall, Verizon has already added ~15 cities to its 5G network. T-Mobile, another leading carrier, has added 5G-ready phones to its collection of devices and is also rolling out its network infrastructure.

As per the new Ericsson Mobility Report, there would be over 10 million 5G subscriptions all over the world by the end of 2019 and up to 400 million subscriptions worldwide by 2024. The Ericsson Mobility Report also revealed that by 2024 at least 65% of the world’s population will have used 5G.

5G had not just rolled out, it had already gone big. NFL stadiums are already serving as a testing ground for 5G. Experts believe, 5G is more than a speed boost. It is being referred to as the foundational tech that’ll rev up the adoption of technologies like virtual and augmented reality.

According to Ericsson, there are around 1 billion cellular IoT connections worldwide, a good-enough reason why 5G operators are increasing deployments and also according to their report released in June 2019, none of the previous generation of mobile technologies were capable of imploring and driving economic growth to the extent 5G has promised. According to another report, 5G subscriptions are expected to push past 1.9 billion by 2024.

The big fours — AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon — had already launched mobile 5G in some of the metro areas of the States. For instance, by July, Sprint had deployed mobile 5G in parts of Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Kansas City, Missouri.

One of the business-side benefits of shifting to 5G would be its ability to inspire “Industry 4.0” – the fourth industrial revolution. Moreover 5G networks will be responsible for 35% of total global mobile traffic by 2024.

Several space organizations are progressively emerging as 5G trendsetters. SpaceX, for instance, has already been licensed to deploy at least 12,000 Starlink internet satellites (and recently applied for 30,000 more).

5G was first commercially launched in the Western Europe region in April 2019. 5G is most likely to nudge the use of autonomous cars and trucks, improving safety on the roads and facilitating growth in the sharing economy. In India, 5G is predicted to arrive by 2022 and will account for around 6% of total mobile subscriptions by the end of 2024.

Tech experts around the world believe that 5G will most likely have a fundamental impact on VR and AR development and usage as well – spurring increased use of the technology.

Disney and Verizon, two big shots, announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier 2019 their 5G-based partnership for production innovation. According to Intel’s 2018 report, 5G mobile gaming revenue by 2028 is expected to reach $100B.
